The U.S. military has roughly 900 active-duty general and flag officers (one-star to four-star), a total that includes officers from all branches, with the largest numbers in the Army, Air Force, and Navy. While the exact number of generals, including one, two, and three-star officers, fluctuates, recent reports show about 838 total, with 446 of those in the higher two-star, three-star, and four-star rank

Four-Star Generals and Admirals: 
There are a total of 39 four-star officers across the services, including 9 in the Army, 3 in the Marine Corps, 10 in the Navy, 12 in the Air Force, and 4 in the Space Force

  • Three-Star Generals and Admirals: 
    There are 148 active-duty three-star officers, with 52 in the Army, 24 in the Marine Corps, 33 in the Navy, 33 in the Air Force, and 3 in the Space Force. 
  • General Officers in Total: 
    About 838 general and flag officers (one-star and higher) were on active duty as of June 2025.
